Alicante Gardens/Recreations
This remarkable sea-front promenade has become the icon of the city. It is more than 500 meters long and was designed in 1867 by the municipal architect Jose Guardiola Pico. Four rows of palms flank the promenade dividing it into three walkways. The enormous mosaic that makes up the walkway represents the waves of the sea in its wavy design. The tri coloured marbles used are the varieties found in the region- Alicante Red, ivory cream and marquina black. Multihued flowers are planted all along; which, along with the green palms and the mosaic combine to make it really stunning. The end of the Explanada is marked by a charming fountain designed by Carlos Buigas.
There are sit out bars and cafes lining the promenade and there is a band stand where the municipal band performs at evenings. In the evenings people crowd here for the cool sea breezes, nice food & drink, and to enjoy the live music.
